My Setup

My initial steps into digital DJing were with Pioneer’s Rekordbox and a DDJ-400, but I soon switched to Native Instruments’ Traktor. The software transition was easy; finding the right controller setup took a bit more time.

setup

My current setup — one that I don’t see myself changing for a while — is:

In the summer of last year (2025), I upgraded from a single X1 Mk2 and Z1 Mk1 two-channel setup to a second X1 Mk2 and two of Native Instruments’ new Z1 Mk2s, taking advantage of Traktor Pro 4’s ability to run four channels using this configuration.

Also not pictured is my single turntable. I use a Native Instruments Audio 6 to combine the audio from one of my Z1s with the output from my SL-1210, allowing me to route vinyl into Traktor as an input channel.

Novation Launchpad Mini

My Launchpad Mini gives me extra buttons beyond my X1s and Z1s, offering more hands-on control in Traktor. I use it to change deck layouts, access favourite playlists, preview tracks, and get full access to Traktor’s simple Pattern Player effects. I’ve also mapped a small section for decks 3 and 4, and I take this compact unit to gigs where only a two-deck controller is available.

Beyond Traktor’s colour output in Controller Manager, I’ve added small square opaque stickers and a Sharpie (not perfect — and they rub off over time!) to help with visual feedback.
